Change an International Flight or Existing Airline Ticket

Need a different international flight after booking? Review options for changing a return or onward flight, rebooking after departure, missed-flight recovery, multi-airline itineraries, agency-issued tickets and Business or First Class travel.

Important: BookMyReservations is an independent travel service, not an airline. Rebooking availability and ticket servicing depend on the airline, ticket issuer, ticket status, itinerary and applicable fare rules. If another airline or agency issued the ticket, that provider may need to service it.

Need to change an Existing International Flight?

International rebooking can mean more than moving a flight to another date. The existing ticket may contain several segments, fare components, booking classes or airlines, and a change to one flight can affect the rest of the itinerary.

Before a replacement flight is confirmed, review who issued the ticket, which segments have already been used, what travel remains, and whether the requested alternative can be applied to the existing ticket.

Change Only the International Return Flight

If the outbound trip has already been flown and only the return flight needs to change, the ticket is partially used. The remaining portion should be reviewed under the applicable after-departure rules rather than treated as a new, completely unused ticket.

A new return date, routing or cabin may require repricing or ticket reissue. See change return flight after departure and partially used ticket assistance.

flight changes After Travel Has Started

Travel plans can change after the first international segment has been flown. You may need to move an onward flight, extend the stay, change the return date or replace a remaining connection.

Used and unused flight coupons, the original fare construction and the proposed new itinerary can all affect what is possible. Review the complete remaining journey before changing one segment.

Missed International Flight or Connection

If an international flight or connection has already been missed, check the current reservation promptly. A missed segment can affect later flights on the same ticket, so purchasing a separate replacement flight without reviewing the existing itinerary can create additional problems.

For this situation, see our dedicated missed international flight assistance.

Multi-Airline and Codeshare flight changes

International itineraries frequently include a marketing carrier, an operating carrier, or several airlines on the same ticket. Replacement flights may need compatible availability and ticketing conditions across more than one segment.

If your itinerary involves partner airlines or a codeshare, see multi-airline and codeshare ticket changes.

Travel-Agency-Issued International Tickets

The airline operating the flight is not always the provider that controls the ticket. If a travel agency issued the ticket, that issuing provider may need to process an eligible change or ticket reissue.

Have the ticket number and booking reference ready so the issuing source can be identified. See travel-agency-issued ticket changes.

Business and First Class International flight changes

Premium-cabin travelers may need to preserve Business or First Class across long-haul and connecting segments. Availability shown for sale does not necessarily mean the booking class required to change an existing ticket is available.

Review the new cabin, routing, connection times, fare difference and ticket conditions before accepting the replacement itinerary. See Business & First Class changes.

Urgent and Last-Minute International flight changes

If travel is today, tomorrow or otherwise time-sensitive, have more than one acceptable departure time or date ready. Flexibility with connections or permitted routings can provide additional alternatives when the preferred flight or required booking class is unavailable.

Do not assume that a seat displayed for a new purchase can automatically be used to exchange an existing ticket.

Flight flight changes vs. Ticket Exchange or Reissue

Rebooking describes moving the traveler to a different flight or itinerary. Completing that change on an existing ticket can also require an exchange or reissue. These are related but not identical parts of servicing a ticket.

For broader ticketing information, see flight ticket exchange and reissue.

flight changes vs. Buying a New International Ticket

A new ticket may sometimes be considered when the existing ticket cannot be changed as requested or a suitable exchange option is unavailable. Before purchasing separately, determine what will happen to the unused value and remaining flights on the original ticket.

You can search current flights to compare alternatives, but do not cancel or abandon the existing itinerary until its status and remaining value have been reviewed.

What to Have Ready When You Call

Have the passenger name, airline or airlines, booking reference, ticket number if available, current itinerary, flights already used, requested new date or route, and preferred cabin ready.

Call (877) 213-9599 to review a ticket that BookMyReservations can service.

Availability, fare differences, fees, refunds and eligibility are governed by the applicable airline and ticket rules. No change, refund, fare or cabin availability is guaranteed until confirmed.

International Flight flight changes FAQs

Can I change only the return flight?

Possibly. The unused return portion, ticket status, fare rules and replacement itinerary need to be reviewed.

Can I change after the trip has started?

Possibly. After-departure and partially used ticket rules may apply to the remaining journey.

What if I missed an international connection?

Review the current reservation and remaining segments promptly because a missed flight can affect later flights on the same ticket.
