How to Change an Existing Flight
If your travel plans changed and you already have a ticket, the available flight-change options depend on the airline, ticket status, fare rules, available inventory and who controls the ticket. A new travel date or flight may also price differently from the original itinerary.

What Happens When a Flight Ticket Is Changed?
A flight change is more than replacing one flight number with another. The ticket first needs to be reviewed to determine who can service it, whether the requested itinerary is permitted, and whether the remaining ticket value can be applied to the new flights.
A typical review may include checking the ticket status and unused flight segments, confirming availability for the requested date or route, reviewing the applicable fare conditions, pricing the new itinerary, and comparing that price with the value available from the existing ticket. If the traveler accepts the new itinerary and pricing, an eligible ticket may then need to be exchanged or reissued. The exact process varies by airline, fare and ticket history.
Who Can Change or Reissue Your Ticket?
The airline shown on the itinerary is not always the only party that can service the ticket. Ticket control can depend on where the ticket was issued and whether it is currently controlled by an airline or travel agency. A ticket issued by another agency may need to be handled by that original issuer, while some airline-controlled situations may need to be handled directly by the carrier.

Before You Accept a New Flight
Before confirming a change, review the complete replacement itinerary rather than only the departure time. Check the travel date, origin and destination airports, connection points and connection time, operating airline, cabin, and any remaining or return flights that should stay in the reservation.
Also review the applicable fare difference or other charges and confirm that the ticket will reflect the new itinerary after any required exchange or reissue. For an itinerary that has already been partly used, the remaining flights deserve particular attention because a change can affect more than one segment.
