Canceling an International Airline Ticket
International tickets can involve multiple flight coupons, connections, fare components and airlines. Before canceling one flight or the entire trip, review the complete ticket so you understand which sectors have been used, which remain active and who controls the ticket.
This page focuses on international cancellation situations. For a general traveler-requested cancellation, see our flight cancellation assistance.
Cancel Only the Return Flight
If the outbound journey has already been flown but the return is no longer needed, the ticket is partially used. Do not assume the unused return can simply be removed without reviewing the ticket conditions and remaining value.
See partially used ticket assistance.
Cancel an Onward International Segment
On a connected itinerary, removing one onward flight can affect later sectors, fare construction or the status of the remaining booking. Review the full sequence before canceling an individual segment.
This is especially important when several flights are issued on the same ticket.
Multi-Airline and Codeshare Tickets
An international itinerary can include a marketing carrier, operating carrier or multiple airlines. The airline shown on a flight segment is not always the same company that issued or controls the ticket.
See multi-airline and codeshare ticket assistance.
Travel-Agency-Issued International Tickets
If a travel agency issued the ticket, the issuing provider may need to handle cancellation, refund or remaining-value requests. Identify the ticketing source before contacting multiple providers.
See travel-agency-issued ticket assistance.
Partially Used International Tickets
Once travel has started, cancellation can be more complex than canceling a completely unused ticket. The flown coupons, unused sectors, fare conditions and remaining itinerary may all matter when determining whether an unused portion has eligible value.
If you still need some of the remaining flights, do not cancel the complete reservation before the active itinerary has been reviewed.
Canceling One Passenger on an International Booking
If several passengers are booked together but only one traveler needs to cancel, review whether that passenger's booking or ticket needs to be separated before any action is taken. Do not assume a cancellation request for one traveler should be applied to the entire party.
International Business Class and First Class Cancellations
Premium-cabin international tickets can represent substantial unused value and may have different fare conditions. Before canceling, compare the ticket conditions with eligible change or exchange options if the traveler still intends to fly.
For ticketing alternatives, see Business Class ticket exchange and First Class ticket exchange.
International Ticket Refund and Remaining Value
A traveler-requested cancellation does not automatically create a cash refund. Refundability and any remaining value depend on the fare conditions, ticket status, used and unused portions, applicable airline rules and ticketing source.
For a partially used international ticket, the value of the unused portion should not be estimated simply by counting the flights that remain.
Missed an International Flight Instead?
If the flight has already departed and the traveler did not fly, the situation may be a missed-flight or no-show issue rather than an advance cancellation. Remaining flights can require prompt review.
See missed international flight assistance.
Still Need to Travel Internationally?
If the trip is still required but the dates, route or return plan changed, compare eligible rebooking or ticket-exchange options before canceling the existing ticket. Cancellation can be the wrong choice when the objective is simply to travel on a different itinerary.
Review international flight rebooking or ticket exchange and reissue.
Important: International cancellation, refund and remaining-ticket-value options vary by airline, fare conditions, ticket status, flown and unused sectors, itinerary, timing and issuing provider. BookMyReservations does not guarantee that every international ticket can be canceled by BMR or that a refund, credit or remaining value will be available.
Information to Have Ready
Have the passenger name, ticket number or booking reference, airline or airlines, international itinerary, travel dates, origin and destination, already-flown sectors and the exact flight or portion you want canceled. Do not send payment-card information by email.
