Need to Change a British Airways Itinerary?
British Airways states that when the fare type permits a change, the booking can be recalculated for the proposed new itinerary. Some bookings can be changed through Manage My Booking, while travel-agent or third-party bookings may need to be handled by the seller that issued the ticket.
The amount required for a voluntary change can depend on the ticket rules, new flight price and how the transaction is handled. British Airways notes that service fees can be separate from ticket-related charges such as a change fee or fare difference.
Change the Date or Time
Eligible British Airways bookings may allow a date or time change through Manage My Booking. Availability and the fare type determine what options are presented.
Before confirming, compare the replacement flight, cabin, connections and total additional amount rather than focusing only on the new departure time.
Fare Difference and Service Fees
A British Airways change can involve more than one type of charge. The airline states that service fees may apply separately from ticket charges, while the transaction may also involve a change fee, cancellation fee or difference in the price of the new ticket.
The applicable amount should be reviewed before the ticket is exchanged or reissued.
Travel-Agent-Issued Tickets
British Airways tells travelers who booked through a travel agent or third party to speak with that seller about making changes. It also states that it cannot change tickets issued by an agent in certain servicing situations, such as ticket name corrections.
Identifying the ticketing source is therefore an important step before attempting to change an agency-issued British Airways itinerary.
Ticket Exchange or Reissue
When a ticketed itinerary is changed, the fare may need to be recalculated and the ticket exchanged or reissued so the new flights and applicable value are reflected correctly.

What to Review Before Changing the Ticket
Review the entire itinerary, not just the segment you want to change. Check the ticketing source, operating carrier, marketing carrier, remaining flight coupons, fare conditions, cabin and booking class. Then compare the requested replacement flights and the total amount required before confirming.
This is particularly important on international itineraries involving connections, partner airlines or more than one carrier.
Do Not Skip a Flight Without Reviewing the Remaining Itinerary
British Airways explicitly warns that if a traveler does not advise the airline in advance and chooses not to travel on one flight, the traveler can be treated as a no-show and all remaining flights in the journey can be cancelled.
If you need to change or cancel only part of the trip, review the ticket before missing the flight. This is especially important when an outbound, connection or intermediate segment is followed by a return flight you still intend to use.
Changing the Return After Travel Has Started
Once the outbound journey has been flown, the ticket is partially used. British Airways states that eligibility and amounts for unused or partially unused ticket refunds depend on the ticket type, and its conditions of carriage address unused portions separately.
A return-flight change after departure should therefore be reviewed against the remaining ticket value and fare conditions. See partially used ticket assistance.
Codeshare and Multi-Airline Itineraries
A British Airways booking can contain flights operated by another airline. Changes to multi-airline itineraries may require checking both the ticketing carrier and the operating carrier, along with availability in the required booking class.
British Airways also notes that some Manage My Booking functions are limited on travel-agent bookings and may not display every flight. After any change, verify the complete itinerary rather than assuming every connected segment updated automatically.
Business Class, First Class and Upgrades
Premium-cabin changes still depend on ticket rules and replacement-flight availability. If a British Airways booking was made through a travel agent, the airline says travelers can contact the agent about an upgrade. Subject to availability, some upgrades may also be offered through Manage My Booking or the British Airways app close to travel.
If the itinerary itself is being changed, confirm the cabin and booking class on every replacement segment before completing the exchange.
If British Airways Cancels the Flight
An airline cancellation is different from a voluntary passenger change. British Airways says it will try to offer a new flight and that the offered replacement can be changed once for free. Travelers who prefer not to continue can apply for a refund under the applicable conditions.
For bookings made through a travel agent or tour operator, British Airways directs travelers back to the agent in relevant cancellation and refund situations, particularly when departure is more than 24 hours away.
Missed Connection After a British Airways Delay or Cancellation
British Airways publishes separate options when a delay of more than five hours or a cancellation causes a missed connection. Where the affected flights are under the same booking reference and the published conditions are met, return travel and refunds for unused flights may be available.
This should not be confused with a passenger voluntarily missing a flight. See our missed flight assistance for broader ticketing considerations.
When Comparing a New Ticket Can Help
If a voluntary change produces a high fare difference, the requested routing is unavailable, or the current ticket is highly restricted, it can be useful to compare a new reservation before deciding. Do not abandon the original ticket until its remaining value, cancellation conditions and onward segments have been reviewed.
Search available flights or call BookMyReservations to review available travel options.
Important: British Airways flight-change, rebooking, cancellation and refund options depend on fare conditions, ticket status, availability, itinerary, market and ticketing source. BookMyReservations does not guarantee that every British Airways ticket can be changed, refunded or serviced. Review applicable options and pricing before confirming a transaction.
