Name Correction on an International Airline Ticket

International name corrections can require more review than a simple domestic reservation because the itinerary may involve passport details, international travel documents, multiple operating carriers, codeshare flights or a ticket issued by a travel agency.

This page focuses on international itineraries. For general passenger-name corrections, see our flight name correction assistance.

Ticket Name Does Not Match the Passport

If the name shown on an international reservation or ticket differs from the travel document that will be used for the trip, review the discrepancy before departure. The appropriate correction depends on the airline, ticket and type of difference.

Have the name exactly as shown on the passport or applicable travel document available for review.

Misspelled Name on an International Ticket

A minor spelling correction is different from replacing the original traveler. Whether an eligible typo can be corrected and whether the ticket must be reissued depend on the applicable carrier and ticketing rules.

Do not assume a correction is automatically permitted or free.

Multi-Airline and Codeshare Itineraries

International travel can involve more than one airline or a codeshare flight. A name correction may need review across the reservation, ticketing carrier and participating operating carriers before a change is made.

See multi-airline and codeshare ticket assistance.

Travel-Agency-Issued International Tickets

The ticketing source matters. If a travel agency issued the ticket, the issuing provider may need to handle an eligible correction or ticket reissue depending on the airline and ticket status.

See travel-agency-issued ticket assistance.

International Ticket Has the Wrong Name?

Have the passenger name currently shown, the correct name from the travel document, airline or airlines, itinerary, booking reference and ticket information ready.

First and Last Names Reversed on International Travel

If the passenger's given name and surname appear in an unexpected order, first determine whether the reservation actually contains an error. Airline reservation displays can format names differently. If a correction is required, the applicable carrier and ticketing procedure should be reviewed before the ticket is changed.

Marriage, Divorce or Other Legal Name Change

A legal-name change may require documentation and airline-specific handling. The objective is to keep the same traveler associated with the ticket while making any permitted correction consistent with the travel documents used for the international journey.

International Name Correction vs. Passenger Transfer

Correcting the original traveler's name is not the same as substituting another traveler. Airline tickets are commonly non-transferable. Do not purchase travel for one person and assume the existing international ticket can later be changed to somebody else's name.

Can an International Name Correction Require Ticket Reissue?

Depending on the airline, ticketing carrier, operating carriers and itinerary, an eligible name correction can require reservation updates and ticket reissue. A reissue should be completed only after the applicable procedure and ticket conditions have been reviewed.

See ticket exchange and reissue assistance for broader ticketing information.

Partially Used International Ticket

If international travel has already started, a name issue on the remaining itinerary can require additional review because the ticket contains both flown and unused coupons. Do not assume an after-departure correction follows the same procedure as an entirely unused ticket.

See partially used ticket assistance.

Do You Also Need to Change the International Itinerary?

A passenger-name correction and a voluntary flight change are separate servicing requests. If the traveler also needs a different date, return flight, route or cabin, review the complete ticket before combining changes.

See international flight rebooking or flight change assistance.

Important: International name-correction rules vary by airline, ticketing carrier, operating carrier, itinerary, ticket status and issuing provider. BookMyReservations does not guarantee that every international ticket can be corrected by BMR, that a correction will be free, or that a ticket can be transferred to another traveler.

Information to Have Ready

Have the passenger name exactly as currently shown, the correct name as shown on the passport or other travel document, airline or airlines, international travel dates and route, booking reference and ticket information ready. Supporting documentation may be required depending on the situation. Do not send passport images or payment-card information by ordinary email unless using an authorized secure process.

If the Existing International Ticket Cannot Be Corrected

If the applicable airline or ticketing rules do not permit the required correction, alternatives may need to be reviewed separately. Before abandoning the existing ticket, determine whether it has any usable or refundable value. You can also search current flights for a replacement itinerary.

International Flight Name Change FAQs

Can a name be corrected on an international flight ticket?

Possibly. International name-correction rules can depend on the airline, ticketing carrier, operating carriers, itinerary, ticket status and issuing provider.

What if the name on my international ticket does not match my passport?

The reservation and ticket should be reviewed against the travel document that will be used for the trip. The required correction procedure depends on the airlines and ticket.

Can a name correction be made on a multi-airline or codeshare ticket?

Possibly, but multi-airline and codeshare itineraries can require additional review because more than one carrier may be involved in the reservation or ticket.

Can I transfer an international airline ticket to another person?

A passenger transfer is different from correcting the original traveler's name. Airline tickets are commonly non-transferable, so a different traveler should not be assumed permitted on the existing ticket.

Can an international name correction require ticket reissue?

Depending on the airline, itinerary and ticketing rules, an eligible correction can require reservation updates and ticket reissue.
